Youtube Video & Google

It seems to me that Google is trying to inherit the earth. The Youtube video site, owned by Google, has launched nine versions across Brazil, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and the UK. Youtube, which has gained wide popularity in the last year, presents the world with video all the way from political commentary to X-rated material. One of my favorite video producers is Vlogloution. These guys crack me up. Be aware though, that some of their stuff is X-rated…
My reason for posting is driven by a recent newsletter I read which was thought provoking. As you know, Youtube provides you with an embed URL and a URL that you can use to post Youtube vids on your site. Personally, I have used this and will continue to do so. Here lies the crux of the situation. According to the newsletter, Youtube robs you of your bandwidth by using your site as a server for its vids. I have no issue with this if the content I am posting is relevant and gives my readers something to use. However, FTR is not a high traffic site in the sense that Youtube is. It gets about 1,000 uniques per week, so bandwidth so far has not been a problem. Think of what this does to a site that has that kind of uniques on a daily basis. You get the idea.
It also makes Youtube very viral. That’s great, until you realize that a Youtube vid puts you one click away from people leaving your site. And that is not a good thing.
There are of course other solutions. There are, of course, free video hosting sites that can help you in your efforts, and software to produce decent video is available online for a very reasonable price.
If you are not using video, I think you are leaving a good bit of cash on the table. Plugins are available for a WP blog to include video from many different sources, and it work seamlessly. Give it a try, and put that cash in your own pocket…
Peace,
Charlie~
