Tools I Can’t Live Without

Being in semi-retirement (yeah, right!) I tend to travel a bit between friends and loved one’s homes. I just returned from house sitting for some friends that took a Caribbean cruise. Their home is nice, but hated the stairs! One of my demands when I go anywhere is internet access. As an IM marketer, I love the portability of my little empire. Anywhere there is internet access, I can work. I can go to the coffee shop down the street with my wife’s laptop, and sit outside with a great mocha latte and enjoy working in different surroundings. It is what I love about IM.

As a freelance writer, though, I have certain needs. For research, all I need is good ol’ Google, but for proper research you must ultimately use Firefox. People can say what they want about Internet Explorer, but using it for research will make you mad. FF utilizes tabbed browsing, and I can ultimately have a dozen windows open at any one time. Here is a good example - if I am writing a blog post, I can’t leave the page without saving the draft. With FF, I simply open a new tab and go where I need to clarify what I may be writing about at any one time. I can gather links, research information, and keep a running watch on any project I am working on.

FF also has so many extensions and plugins that it would take a day to mention them all. Here is what I use: Scribefire to blog from a certain page. SEO for Firefox. FTP for FF. This is great to use. I can’t live without it! There is weather, which is a great feature. There is an extension called Firebug, which allows you to monitor CSS, HTML, and Java on your web sites. You can debug and modify with the extension. The list goes on and on, and there are just too many things to mention in a blog post. If you aren’t using FF for your marketing efforts, then you are missing out on a great many features available to make working the web a much easier experience.

My other “must have” is Notetab Pro. On my office computer, I have the full version. When traveling, I carry the exe file for the Notetab Lite on a memory stick. It is freeware, and works great. If you have ever tried writing articles in Wordpad, you will appreciate this freebie to no end. It features tabbed viewing, has extensive libraries that allow you to work in CSS, HTML, and TopStyle. It is one of the greatest tools I have ever used. if you are a casual writer, then Notetab Lite is a good choice.

My line of thinking has always been this - if it makes your work easier, smarter, and more accurate, then you need the proper tools. These 2 tools are things I just can’t work without.

Peace,

Charlie~
